As part of her consular mission to Bilbao, H.E. the Ambassador of Ghana to Spain paid a courtesy call on the Mayor of Bilbao on 10th October, 2025.During her visit, she met Mr. Carlos Garcia Buuendia, Subdelegado del Gobierno en Bizkaia. The meeting focused on the welfare of the Ghanaian community, diaspora integration, and new areas of cooperation.
The Mayor welcomed the Ambassador and highlighted the city’s role in supporting foreign residents, including Ghanaians. Both sides discussed opportunities for collaboration in education, sports, fisheries, and trade. The Ambassador also proposed an investment drive in Bilbao to attract local businesses to Ghana.
Following the meeting, the Ambassador visited AMIArte Workshop, a training centre run by Spanish art professor Begone. The centre employs and trains African migrants in art, providing them with skills to improve their socio-economic wellbeing. Many Ghanaians have benefitted from this initiative.
The Ambassador praised Professor Begone’s efforts and reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to supporting its diaspora while building stronger ties with Spanish institutions and local communities.
H.E Regina Appiah – Sam concluded her official visit to Bilbao with a diaspora engagement meeting held at the Bilbao City Hall. During the interaction, members of the Ghanaian community had the opportunity to share their experience and challenges living in the city, with the aim of helping the Mission better understand their specific needs and explore ways to enhance consular services and community support.
The Economic and Trade Officer of the Embassy also engaged participants on business and investment opportunities in Ghana, highlighting key areas such as agribusiness, tourism, real estate, and small-scale entrepreneurship. The Officer encouraged members of the diaspora to leverage their experiences and remittances to invest in Ghana’s growing sectors and to contribute to national development.
The Ambassador reaffirmed the Mission’s commitment to the welfare of the Ghanaian community in Spain and urged them to remain law-abiding, united, and proactive in strengthening the image of Ghana abroad.
